In this week's class, we created the beginning of a social network using Ning, located at: http://cuin7376.ning.com/
For this week's hands-on assignment, explore how you can add content to a Ning and then add some interesting (and educationally meaningful?) content of your own to our Ning. This might include a series of images, a video clip or two using the Ning video player, and/or a few badges, widgets or Ning Gadgets.
When you have completed this assignment, post a comment in which you describe the content you added to the Ning.

Class Seven Assignment

The two items I added to the “ning” were a math video and a notice of an upcoming event. The video that I uploaded was the answers to the first ten problems on an arithmetic review sheet that I handed out to my developmental class last summer. In addition, I added a notice of our class upcoming final project presentations. I think this site has a lot of educational potential because it encompasses some of the main social networking features that are currently used in educational setting, such as a blog page, the ability to add video, announcements, send e-mail, and to post pictures just to name a few, all in one place. In addition, as a math teacher, I can compartmentalize the topics that I cover into subgroups using this resource.
Just an added tidbit, the high school that I graduated from has a social network on this site. Boy! I found myself spending a lot of time adding people to my friends list, commenting to their comments and joining the various subgroups that have been made. For instance, I am a part of the class of 76, the band, Alpha Fraternity subgroups.
I uploaded images to the Ning and created two educational albums. One was an album of Kindergarten work. (These are not my own images. I used Google images to find some quick samples.) If I were to create a Ning for my own classroom it would be for the parents. This would be a method that I could use to share student's work with the parents. The second album is a compilation of educational images that could be used in a Kindergarten classroom. These could be shared in a Ning with other K teachers. I also browsed through the Ning gadgets but could not find any that I thought were educational. I also added a theme to my own page.
The one problem that I found was that the bulk photo loader took forever to load so I used the single photo load option. This is a minor detail but if this were the main reason I created a Ning (to share images with parents) then I would be frustrated with this and move on.
I posted some info about flowcharting for my assignment on Ning. The first post includes a couple of videos about flowcharting using Gliffy (which is the software I'm using for my web startup). The second posting includes some links for basic flowcharting tips that may be useful for beginners.
I tried adding one of the gadgets that seemed to be relatively educational, but the gadget would only show up on my page. Then I added a video I searched from YouTube. I found a video that teach Thermodynamics using graphic from a computer game. Although it's a little bit hard to understand from what they were singing, it was very creative and made a boring subject seem fun.
Adding video from websites like YouTube is very easy. I just copied and pasted the embed code, and it's done.
I added student achievement picture from my school. Multiple times I attempted to add video but it always hung up. Both the single fiel and multiple file pages did not work. I added the Sudoku gadget and thought it could be of use in math classes when students need directed free time. I attempted to add the movie clip gadget but the link was broken. I thought that it could be used in a theatre or communications class
Ning is pretty cool. I modified my photo and added a picture of me sailing on a 50' yacht earlier this summer.
I also added a few comments, as well as an image of me and colleagues attending WWDC, a developers conference thrown annually by Apple, Inc., in San Francisco, CA.
