Class Six Assignment 1

Conduct some research on the web to see if you can find a podcast that does a good job of presenting educationally useful material.

When you have completed this assignment, post a comment in which you describe the podcast you selected and discuss the details such as what is about, who created it, who is the intended audience, what you like about it and any additional information you think we should know about this resource.

Grammer Girl is a quick and dirty tips podcast. Grammar Girl provides short, friendly tips to improve your writing. Grammar Girl covers some of the grammar rules and word choice guidelines that can confound even the best writers. Mignon Fogarty is the creator and host of Grammar Girl. The intended audience would be anybody interested in improving their writing. The target audience would range from school age children upper elementary through adult learners. You can submit by telephone or e-mail topics you would like to be covered. A scripted version of the podcast is provided.

In my project maybe the frame of this concept can be used on a Wiki page for a FAQ. Maybe we can provide answers to the frequently asked questions by podcast and text. For future questions, maybe we can provide a phone number where students can call in a question and both question and answer be made a podcast.

Introduction to Chemistry Podcast is a podcast of a chemistry course at the University of California, Berkeley. I believe all of the audio podcasting files were recorded from lectures of the professor named Heino Nitsche. Users have a choice to choose between listening to streaming audio or downloading the files to a computer or an mp3 player. I like this podcast is because this shows that in the future lessons will not take place only in classrooms. Students can listen to lectures anytime and anywhere they want, and they can review them as many times as they would like. One possible drawback is that it might be too boring to spend one hour listening to an audio of the lecture alone.

My site is called the Barrett Project Interaction. The podcasts can be found at http://barrettpi.blogspot.com/. I found it on the EPN site: http://epnweb.org/index.php. These podcasts are created by Barrett Elementary students. The intended audiences are other classes at the school, parents, and teachers. These podcasts are created by classrooms throughout the school and for various reasons ranging from the news presented by a group of second graders to an informational how to make a strawberry smoothie to a story about a popsicle boy. I LOVE that there is a wide range of topics that are being covered by varying ages of students.

I'd like to share a really good site that acts as a online center for educational podcasts. I found a lot of great podcasts here about a variety of subjects:

For this class, i focused on those podcasts related to Instructional Technology and Information Technologies. These podcasts are great learning tools for students.

I checked out www.yogajournal.com to find some yoga sequence podcasts and see if they were any good. The one I am describing here can be found at:

http://www.yjnewsletters.com/audio/jason_episode8.mp3

Unfortunately this podcast is only for people fairly familiar with yoga as it uses a lot of jargon and assumes familiarity with yoga poses. The teacher in the podcast is quite annoying in my opinion and it sounds like a recording of a regular class, which I believe is irresponsible. The instruction should be adapted for the podcast medium, which it is not here.

Like Shawn, I found a site that actgs as a directory of podcasts in IdiotVox. Once on the site you can choose the education podcasts and there are plenty to choose from.

The directory allows you to listen to the podcast directly or link to its original page. The one I found interesting was Research at Chicago: The University of Chicago. I thought about this class and saw how within the college of education and the research areas, podcasts could benefit current students.
